Shawn Healey | Dragon KOI Project Day 13 of 365: WHATS IN A FRACTION OF A SECOND?
Tonight we made our way to the big city...Flagstaff, which is about 45 miles North of us to do big city stuff. Ya know, get bras, go to SAM'S CLUB for party food and eat sushi. At one of our favorite Sushi Restaurants, Karma Sushi (which you should visit if you are ever in Flagstaff on the famous Route 66), we were seated at the bar because it was either that or wait. We chose that. Hayley and I had an interesting observation of the bar tender... different observation. It was very busy in the restaurant and it seemed that she was the only one filling drink orders, as well as food orders for those of us at the bar. I got there a little earlier and had already ordered a beer. Hayley finally joined and was deciding on a wine. The bartender stopped, asked if she could get Hayley a drink and within about 2 seconds, said that she would give her a minute and walked away. She came back asked if she had decided, where Hayley ordered her wine. A couple minutes later, she came back with the wine, asked if we were ready to order... again within 2 seconds said that she would give us a couple more minutes while she got drinks for our neighbors and walked off. She came back and we ordered our sushi.
So what's the issue? From my perspective, she was being efficient, from Hayley's perspective she was being impatient and slightly rude. I thought this was interesting and could see both sides. While ultimately, the bartender was generally very nice, her body language and response did come across as somewhat impatient. As I started today's post with, What's in a fraction of a second... If she would have waited that fraction of a second longer before moving on with her "efficiency", our experience would have been different. We wouldn't have felt rushed, she would have come across much friendlier and who knows... maybe even gotten a bigger tip in the end. It was clear to me that the bartender was just in her head and needing to stay on tome of the chaos that was happening at the time. It was also clear that if she wouldn't have been quite so much in her head and taken a fraction of a second breath, our experience would have been different.
How often do you hold on to those fractions of seconds and lose opportunities that could lead to a different result and not even know it? Maybe more than you think...
Until tomorrow...
