Shawn Healey | Dragon KOI project Day 15 of 365: DISAPPOINTMENT
Today I went to a friends house to watch the Cowboys vs. Packers game. This was a playoff game toward the super bowl. It really was a great game, however the wrong team won. I can understand my friends frustration, disappointment... depression over the wrong team losing. Being an avid Oregon Duck Football fan, this past year was a...well.,. brutally disappointing season as well. I understand the emotional rollar coaster that is involved in watching your team lose. Particularly when the season had so much promise (not that this was the case with the Ducks this year).
The interesting thing to me is what is behind the disappointment. What is it about our "team" losing that causes such an emotional reaction. I've seen this with sports teams... I saw it (and continue to see it) with this year's election. Although we have an emotional connection to the end result, we really aren't connected to this result as much as we feel that we are. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that we don't have significant feelings and involvement with the result, but in the end what is really important (although some of you may disagree with me here), is the connection that we have with ourselves, our family and those close to us. I understand the moral and ethical dilemma that we sometimes face when "our team" doesn't win, however I wonder if we often place more importance on the "win" than what the outcome truly means in our lives.
I love sports... the work that goes into the ultimate outcome... the fitness level of athletes, the strategy, the "any given Saturday (or Sunday). I love politics... mostly observing... mainly because of how people chose their "team" and really don't see the "other side" and the intelligence and very logical rationale that is often there (this goes either way) in their thought process.
I just wonder if most of the time we get lost in a pack mentality when we are associated with a "team"...winning...losing...emotional persuasion.
Just a thought...
Until tomorrow...
